Tour 1, aka “London Calling”, was held on last weekend in May. Playing on our home turf at Wimbledon was the best place to win!
On Saturday, we began in a pool against Yaka (all the way from France), Iso (all the way from… London) and Crown Jewels (also… from London). Our first game was against Iso. They moved the disc through our zone quickly with short but effective passes, but weren't able to put the disc passed our deep marks. We scored quickly on offence (despite the rain), and the game finished 15-3. The rain (and horrendous wind) picked up for the next game (against Yaka), making this a tighter and more tense game. We forced it a bit against their 3-2-2 zone, but we got the D back enough to win convincingly - 13-8. The final game of the day was against Crown Jewels. We put a couple quick points in which destroyed their momentum, and they never quite got it back. Despite a few long upwind points, we managed to protect our end zone the entire game. Final score was 15-0. Sunday was a much sunnier day (though still windy), and a bit of a sideline was building up. The quarter final was against Nice Bristols. They had lost a couple key players from last year, but were still a team of fast, efficient cutters. They scored a few points in the first half, but once we stopped their cuts deep from the front of the stack, we dominated the game, winning 15-4. The final was against Leeds. You may recall that pretty much every final in the past three or four years has been against them. While the wind contributed to some particularly lengthy points, we took the half and stayed ahead by a couple points for the rest of the game. The ultimate point was an epic huck from Catherine Gainey to Fran Scarampi, whose stunning layout grab was the talk of BritDisc the following week. Final score: 12-8. Well done ladies, and bring on Boston! |
